Sticky key? Wobbly cylinder? Here's how to know if it's a quick fix or time for a new lock.
Locks are mechanical parts, and like any mechanical part they eventually wear out. But knowing when to repair versus replace saves you money and hassle. Here are the signs a Randburg locksmith looks for when deciding.
1. The key feels 'sloppy' in the cylinder
If the key wiggles side-to-side more than a few degrees, the internal pins are worn. A rebuild is possible but usually not cost-effective — replacement wins.
2. You need to jiggle to open
That's worn pin stacks or a bent key. Get it checked before it strands you.
3. Visible corrosion or rust
Once oxidation is inside the cylinder, the lock will fail without warning. Replace.
4. After any attempted break-in
Even if the lock 'still works', internal parts may be compromised. Always replace after forced-entry attempts.
5. You've lost track of who has a key
Not a mechanical issue, but a security one. Change the cylinder.
