Are Biometric Locks Really More Secure?

Fingerprint locks solve a real problem and introduce two new ones. Whether that trade is worth making depends almost entirely on the door — and on who is going to be using it every day.

What the fingerprint actually replaces

A biometric lock does not make a door harder to force. The frame, the hinges, the bolt and the keeper decide that, and they are identical whether the mechanism is opened by a finger, a key or a code. What the fingerprint replaces is the credential — the thing you have to carry, remember or hand over — and that is where the entire value sits. For some households that is genuinely useful. Nobody carries a key, nobody shares a code that then leaks, and access can be added and removed per person rather than by changing something everybody uses. In a house with several adults coming and going at different hours, that removes a category of daily friction that keys handle badly. For others it solves a problem they did not have. A household of two who have both carried the same key for eleven years without incident are paying for convenience they will barely notice, on a door whose actual weakness is a keeper screwed into soft timber. The lock is not the reason that door is the way it is, and the fingerprint changes nothing about it. The two problems it introduces

The first is power. A biometric lock is an electronic device and it will one day have nothing to run on, usually with the door shut and usually while nobody was watching the warnings. That is the single commonest call about these products and it is entirely predictable. The question to settle before buying is what the override arrangement is, and whether a physical key can open it.

The second is reading reliability, which is the part suppliers say least about. Fingerprint readers are noticeably less consistent with wet hands, cold hands, dusty or work-worn fingertips, and the fingers of very young and very elderly people. A reader that is ninety-five per cent reliable sounds excellent and means a failure roughly every fortnight for somebody using it twice a day. Neither of those is a reason not to buy one. Where they work badly

Outdoors and exposed. Sun, dust and driven rain are hard on any electronics, and readers in particular do not enjoy any of them. A biometric fitting on a gate or an exposed entrance will have a shorter life than the manufacturer's testing suggests, and it will degrade in reading reliability before it fails outright — which is the worst way for it to go. On any door where being locked out would be a serious problem: an elderly relative's flat, a property nobody visits often, a holiday house that stands empty for weeks. Those are exactly the situations where a flat battery becomes an event rather than an inconvenience, and where the household is least likely to have kept up with the maintenance.

And on a door whose real weakness is structural. A biometric lock on a frame that gives, hinges that have dropped or a keeper fixed into a few millimetres of timber is an expensive component in a weak assembly. That is a lock repair or an alignment job first, and an upgrade second — in that order, always.

Questions worth asking before buying one

With no power and no battery, what does this do, and can I open it with a physical key? That is the first question and it is the one least often answered on packaging. If the honest answer is that there is no mechanical override, you are accepting that a flat battery means a locksmith visit. That may well be a fine trade — but it should be a decision rather than a discovery.

How many people can be enrolled, and can one person's access be removed without disturbing everybody else's? On a household that hardly matters. On a business it is the whole point, and a system that requires re-enrolling everybody to remove one person has not solved the problem you bought it for.

And where is the fingerprint data held? A unit that keeps enrolment on the device is a self-contained product; one that depends on an account and a connection is a different proposition with a different set of things that can go wrong. The realistic security comparison

Against a good mechanical lock on a well-fitted door, a biometric unit is not more secure in the sense most people mean. It is more controllable — better at managing who may enter and when — and slightly less robust, because it has more that can stop working. Those are different axes and conflating them is where most of the marketing lives.

What it does remove is the credential risks that mechanical keys carry: a key copied without your knowledge, a key that went out years ago and never came back, a code that has been repeated to an unknown number of people. On a property where those are the actual worry — a let unit, a business, a house with several key holders — that is a real gain.

What it does not remove is anything about how the door resists force. If a walk round the outside of your property says the realistic way in is a garage side entrance with a builder's cylinder, then that is the job, and a fingerprint reader on the front door is a purchase rather than a solution.

A reasonable position

Buy one where the access-management problem is real: several people, changing over time, on a door that is sheltered. Insist on a mechanical override. Enrol more than one finger for each person. Change batteries on a date rather than on a warning, and keep the spare key somewhere sensible that is not inside the building it opens. Where a job turns out to be car locksmith work instead, it is the same number and the same vehicles.

Do not buy one to make a door harder to force, because that is not what it does. Do not fit one to an exposed gate expecting the manufacturer's service life, and do not fit one to a door that has been sticking for a year — sort the door out first, at which point you may find the mechanical lock was never the problem.
